"Intense fires burn beneath this stretch of the Pacific Northwest that geologists call Cascadia, after the chain of Cascade [Range] volcanoes that includes Mounts Shasta, St. Helens, and Rainier. Cascadia begins about 200 miles [322 kilometers] north of San Francisco and ends along the north coast of Vancouver Island."
