"Torchlight guides the papal party along the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross, through the Colosseum. An athletic John Paul II carries the cross throughout the Good Friday procession, stopping at each of the 14 stations, which denote Christ's suffering and death. Setting enhances symbolism at one of the world's enduring landmarks, where early Christians faced lions for the amusement of Romans."
