"How do you manage 12,000 sheep on a 42,000-acre [17,000-hectare] station? On the Macintosh ranch you fly a 1960 Cessna to spot your flock and ride motorcycles to round 'em up. This is the idyllic, almost mythic image of Australia cherished by so many folks, Aussies included. But the fact is, the bulk of this continent is so dry that most people live on the coast and work in the city. I did it myself and had no idea what I was missing."
