"Garden consciousness like this is at the center of spiritual life in Kyoto. For a thousand years the Imperial Palace was situated here. Around it grew an array of temples, subtemples, shrines, schools, and detached palaces, each with its own gardens and often, it seemed, its own garden philosophy."

"These gardens, still tended by monks and nuns, are intimate but don't feel small. They are thoroughly thought out, yet seem inevitable. They are sensual but speak to the spirit."
