"On October 16, the rushing Snake River brought the expedition into the Columbia [River] at last. The Corps paused at the confluence 'to smoke with the Indians who had collected there in great numbers to view us ... they formed a half circle around us and Sung for Some time,' [William] Clark wrote. Continuing downriver through a semidesert punctuated by buttes like the landmark Sisters (right), they were hailed by other Indian groups who gathered on the riverbanks to greet them."
