"A small foot on a woman is a beautiful foot, said an ancient Chinese tradition. That aesthetic led millions of parents, including those of 79-year-old Xiao Xou-Xiang, to bind their daughters' feet. The practice, now illegal, required breaking the arch of the foot, then constricting it, which resulted in a stylized, mincing gait."
