"My favorite place [at Saiho-ji Temple] became the quiet moso bamboo grove at the back of the garden. The vertical cylinders of bamboo rose from the forest floor in a clean, strong way. But the foreground was a dry blanket of dull bamboo leaves.

"A few days later rain fell, and I returned to the grove. Gardeners had swept maple leaves from the moss carpet of the main garden and spread them here, over the bamboo leaves. The starry, wet leaves were radiant and gave to the foreground a strength to match the bamboo. This wasn't an accident; it was an incidental act of inspired gardening."
