Nunatuk, South Georgia Island, 1998

An ebony mountain peak rises from a glacier on South Georgia Island. This forbidding landscape in the frigid South Atlantic was first traversed in 1916 by the famed explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and two other members of his ill-fated Antarctic expedition.

The harrowing trek across South Georgia Island was just one of many travails in what started as a journey of exploration—an attempt to cross Antarctica on foot—but turned into a 20-month battle for survival. All of Shackleton's 28 crew members survived the ordeal.
